Kill Dane Field

The Castle of Rochdale would have protected its owners from invasion and acted as a great look out point as it was built on top of a hill. Next to the site of the castle is an area known as “Kill Dane Field” (now the site of the gas works) and here in medieval times, probably between the tenth and eleventh centuries, a great battle took place. The Danes marched into the area and invaded the castle looking to overthrow the Saxons. The Danes were defeated and much of their army slaughtered while the Saxons were able to retreat back to the castle.
