Castleton Cricket Club

Castleton Cricket Club, which dated from the mid 1850’s, won the South Lancashire Shield in 1914.

By the 1870’s there were numerous local teams including Buersil, Healey, Littleborough, Castleton, Rochdale, Bamford, Bluepits (Castleton), Hopwood Windsor (Heywood), and Greenbooth. Many of the clubs had ‘first’ and ‘second’ teams – sometimes even a ‘third’ team. There were also ‘Works’ teams, like Castleton Print Works, Kelsall & Kemp Woolsorters

Mr Frank Taylor played cricket for Lancashire County Cricket Club where he was elected a Hon. Life Member and was President of Castleton Cricket Club. His association with the cricket club spanned a period of over 60 years. In July 1877 along with E L Chadwick (213 not-out) Castleton made a record score of 484 for 2 against Rusholme, Mr Taylor made 125.
